About the program
What will I learn?
The eight-week course provides instruction in formal mindfulness meditation methods including a body scan, gentle yoga, sitting meditation and walking meditation. These practices offer students a means of self-regulation and encourage the cultivation of greater awareness. Students learn to reduce their particular symptoms of psychological and somatic distress as well as to respond to challenges with less reactivity and greater clarity.
The course also provides instruction in informal mindfulness meditation practices such as being in nature and eating with awareness.
Midway through the course students learn about the physiology of stress and how it relates to their individual stress reactivity patterns. Using the latest scientific research, we explore how the act of mindful noticing activates innate internal resources that can change our perception of daily events, including stressful ones. This altered appraisal allows students to use a broader range of both internal and external responses so that they need not remain locked in stress patterns.
How is the course structured?
We meet on Tuesday nights from 5:15 pm to 6:45pm. Class is divided into periods of guided meditation practice and group discussion.
Toward the end of the course we hold the All Day Retreat which is generally on a Sunday from 9am-3pm. Because of the longer opportunity to practice, students are able to experience mindfulness in a deeper way.
How much time do I need to commit to outside of class?
In order to reap the rewards of mindfulness meditation it is reasonable to expect about 30-40 minutes of homework per day. This includes using one of the 3 guided meditation cds provided per day as well as occasional activities in the workbook. Reading assignments are minimal because the course is practice-based.

If you are paying out-of-pocket, the rate is $500 per person for the eight week class, $250 is due on Class 1 and balance due by Class 5.
